The End of an Era

It’s funny that just yesterday I said I wanted to see if I can keep using one word titles to my posts, and today I broke the tradition.

Another tradition that’s broken is this website. I had been using Squarespace to create my own website for five more years. Although the website serves as a personal website for academic purpose, I still found a beautiful and simple template, and customized to my own taste. This template has been used on my website for five years. During this time, I tried other templates as well, but soon I changed it back. One main reason I love this one is the menu bar — it’s positioned at the bottom of the screen, and doesn’t disappear when you scroll down. This style is really unique, and it reminds me of Mai Kuraki’s official website before 2006. Gradually I wanted to save that style, and make it my own. I guess that’s one way of having the feel that I’m different and I’m unique.

Now I have graduated more than one year, and I have decided another path of my life. I don’t want to do research any more, and this website — originally used for academia — seems no longer useful. And it looks like I don’t have anything to show others as well. All I need is within myself.

I removed publication page — visitors can click the link to Google Scholar; I removed profile page — visitors can download my CV; I removed portfolio page, but I might add that back later. So now, everything that’s useful for others is on the cover page, with necessary links. No more redundant or fancy pages.

The reason why I kept this website, is because I want to keep writing on this blog. No need to write for a book, like the one about my life in Boulder that I still haven’t finished and probably won’t. Just write down things, everyday life. I had been picky about the template I’m going to use. Finally, I found my current template, which is perfect. It shows my posts and pictures in a very clean and elegant way. There might still be a lot of customizations to do, but I am happy with this.

I always like poking around with themes or templates. Many times, after using a template for a couple of weeks, I change it because I was tired of it, and I wanted something new. Only this template, I had been using five years. It’s definitely a long time for me. Now it’s time to let the 5-year old template retire, like my academic career.
